Program

We are excited to inform the people of Uganda that The African Touch is opening a school for therapeutic massage at the Wentz Medical Clinic, located in Ggaba.

Program Overview

The African Touch Education Fund Society (The African Touch) is a registered Canadian charity. We provide individuals with training in the skills of therapeutic massage, and support to obtain and sustain gainful employment within their African communities. By giving these individuals the skills of massage therapy, The African Touch provides hope, empowerment, and an increase in self-sufficiency. Possible job opportunities for students could be in venues from health centers, spas, hotels, safari lodges and others.

Program Outcomes

Upon graduation students will be able to give relaxation massages as well as recognize and treat a variety of injuries and pain in the body for example sprains, strains, headaches, or pain in virtually any area of the body. Upon graduation, they will receive a certificate recognized by the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada. Graduates will have the skills and credentials to help them secure sustained employment.

Program Outline

The program is 500 hours and runs five hours of class time a day, five days a week, for five months. Courses, listed below. Professional development covers self-care, clinical care (how to run a clinic), and business. Business topics include, time management, communication, code of ethics, bookkeeping, record keeping, money management, marketing, and others. The course breakdown is as follows:

206 hrs of Clinical Sciences
60 hrs of Professional Development
60 hrs of Musculoskeletal Anatomy and Kinesiology
42 hrs of Pathology
42 hrs Anatomy and Physiology
6 First Aid
4 hrs of Nutrition
80 hrs of Supervised Practicum

Program Cost

Students will be responsible for accommodation, transport and meals throughout the program. The course will cost 50,000 Shillings per month, or 250,000 Shillings in total. The following are the payment options for the first program.

  1. Students can pay for this up front, or in monthly installments.

  2. If students can't afford the tuition, they may "pay" for the tuition in volunteer hours, either through community massages or through donating their time to maintaining the school (laundry, facility maintenance, volunteer work at The Wentz Medical Clinic, etc). Hours will be tracked and recorded.

  3. Students would also be required to sign a contract stating that if they drop out of the program, they must pay 500,000 Shillings, unless they have a legitimate reason for quitting. We hope this would encourage commitment to completing the program.

As a policy, The African Touch will not refuse student admission due to lack of finances

Student Eligibility

Students need to be tested for reading comprehension and must provide transcripts as evidence of completion of A level schooling. Students must be hard working, enthusiastic, personable and have a good working knowledge of reading and writing English. In addition, they will be selected based on financial need, inability to access continuing education, and other barriers to education and employment. Preference will be given to women and orphans because of the additional barriers they face.

Student Expectations

Students must maintain a 70% average, in academics and practicum, in order to pass.
