Massage for Africa - RMT Fundraiser

During the week of December 12 - 17, 2005, participating BC Registered Massage Therapists contributed $5.00 from each massage they gave and invited their clients to match that donation. All proceeds went towards the Massage Academy Project in Africa.

Massage for Africa Campaign Results
(As seen in the Spring 2006 Edition of the BC Massage Practitioner)

I would like to begin by thanking the BC Massage Practitioner journal by providing the invaluable service of publishing my article and poster in the winter 2005 edition. This was my most effective tool for reaching out to RMTs across the province to encourage their participation in the fundraiser for The African Touch Education Fund Society.

As of January 26th, $5185 had been raised; 32 BC RMTs participated, approximately half from Victoria and area. Two donations were received by corporate sponsors. My heartfelt thanks to all the RMTs who participated, wrote letters and sent emails of encouragement. Your contributions will benefit the blind and slum residents of Nairobi, who will receive vocational training through the Massage Academy Project. Your positive energy has fueled my passion to help others who may never have access or the opportunity to obtain formal education.

Special thanks to the following:

  • The OVCMT staff and students who allowed me to give a presentation at their college and facilitated a student phone campaign for the Okanagan region.
  • The out-of-province RMTs who contributed: Ladonna Smith from Calgary Alberta, and Carol Zuckernick from Aurora, Ontario.
  • Carla Wiseman and Kim Brandt. Both RMTs contributed over $400.00!
  • Amber Mawson, a student of the OVCMT who recruited her own patients and donated 100% of the earnings to this campaign. (This brought me to tears!)

To those RMTs who may not have had the opportunity to mail your contributions yet, please send them to:

The ATEF Society

Yours in health,

View our short three-minute promotional video by clicking the button below.

Television:
Contact your local TV station and tell them about the Massage for Africa fundraising campaign. A 3-minute informational DVD about The African Touch Massage Academy Project is available. This will provide them with background material they may want to use as part of their interview with you. If your TV station is interested, please phone Yvonne at (250) 813-2264; we will then send you a DVD which can be released with the condition of crediting footage to SHAW TV.

Newsprint:
Choose the paper which will give you the most coverage in your area. You may refer to the news article displayed on the website listed above on the current news page. This can be used as a lead-in to solicit their interest; the company then can use this as background to write their own article.

Radio:
You will need to be well versed in the operations of The African Touch Massage Academy Project. Most of the pertinent information can be gathered from the website. Please contact Yvonne at (250) 813-2264 before proceeding with this media source. Thank you.

Remember the focus of your advertising is to promote your own practice by participating in this fundraiser event.
Use this medium as an opportunity to educate the public as to your training, qualifications, years in practice, the range of conditions that RMTs treat, and of course your clinic location.

Posters:
A glossy poster will be included in the center of the winter issue of the BCMP journal. Please post it in a high-exposure area as soon as you receive it in the mail.

Dialogue:
This is your greatest marketing tool. Prepare a short explanation of the fundraising campaign. (see poster in the BCMP journal for brief summary). Show them the poster and invite them to make a $5.00 contribution to The African Touch Education Fund Society.

Thank you note:
If they choose to make a donation, please give them the thank-you message that they can take with them. Please click on one of the document formats below. You will help reduce costs and promote the work of The African Touch by printing yourself. If you have any trouble downloading or printing these documents, please feel free to contact us.

Gift Certificates:
December is a good time to sell Christmas gift certificates. During the week of Dec. 12 - 17, take advantage of the Massage For Africa campaign as a time to increase your gift certificate sales. The same donation request applies to you and your client. Your $5.00 contribution is also an investment in gaining new patients during the upcoming slow months of January and February. You may want to enclose a thank you note with the gift certificate.

Any Questions??

Do I have to participate during the entire week?
Any donation from RMT's and their clients is greatly appreciated.
You are invited to participate to whatever extent you wish. You may want to choose three or four of the days during that week, or to participate fully.

Can the African Touch issue Income Tax receipts?
The African Touch Education Fund Society is a registered non-profit organization. Unfortunately we do not yet have charitable status, and are therefore unable to issue tax receipts. If a client wishes to write a cheque or send their own donation, please direct them to the website, or to the mailing information on the poster and thank you note.

How do I send the money to The African Touch?
Your donation can be sent via cheque or money order to:

The African Touch Education Fund Society
Department #26, Box 4276

V8X 3X8
CANADA
